When Should You Need Massage Therapy?

When should you receive a therapeutic massage or body care? The question is much more than you think. People ask if they should receive massage therapy in the morning, afternoon or evening. They want to know if they should be massaged before they start to feel pain, or wait until their muscle pains become unbearable.

In my Singapore massage therapy and bodywork practice in Signature Massage, I answer each of these questions by saying, “You should come every day.” My answer is, of course, ironic. I then explain that doing massage therapy every day would be good, but unnecessary and perhaps too expensive. In addition, when and how often you receive a massage therapy, it depends on the goals you want to achieve with massage therapy. The way we achieve your goals with massage therapy is a little more complicated than a simple Q & A in this article. This should be a live discussion between you and your massage therapist or body worker, but what about the basic questions? Let’s answer these:

Q1. Should I receive my massage therapy in the morning, afternoon or evening? I do not want to fall asleep at work, but I would like to feel better during the day.

A1. Many people are concerned about this one, but do not worry. Massage therapy is relaxing and some people fall asleep during the session, but that does not mean you’re going to be sleepy afterwards. In fact, many people feel more energetic and relaxed after their massage therapy session. However, whatever the time of your massage, you will probably sleep better when you finally go to bed. So get a massage when it suits you.

Q2. Should I receive my massage therapy before the onset of my muscle pain or should I wait until it really hurts me before receiving a massage therapy?

A2. In my experience, it is much better to use massage therapy to prevent muscle pain or prevent recurrence of muscle pain. Some massage therapists and clients think that waiting until you feel moderate pain allows them to find the source more easily. However, it’s rarely true. Get early help.

Q3. Should I receive massage therapy before, during or after a workout or sporting event?

A3. Yes. There are specialized massage therapy techniques designed to help you in your fitness and sports efforts. Sports massage is often broken down into pre-event, inter-event and post-event techniques to improve performance and promote recovery. If you do not have access to massage therapy at every stage of your activity, choose what is most important to you: performance or recovery.

I still believe that you should come every day if you can because if an “apple a day” is good, then a “massage a day” is really, really well. Of course, the benefits of massage and body work are at your disposal even if you only receive them once.
